SOT FDA Colloquia on Emerging Toxicological Science Challenges in Food and Ingredient Safety

February 23, 2015—Application of ADME/PK Studies to Improve Safety Assessments fro Foods and Cosmetics
FDA, College Park, Maryland—Live Webcast—Register to participate by webcast.
Presented by the Society of Toxicology in conjunction with FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition

The focus of this colloquium is on the application of ADME/PK studies to improve safety assessments for foods and cosmetics. Pharmacokinetic data on the time-course of a chemical in the body can be used to support the key extrapolations that are typically necessary for chemical risk assessments. In the past, the primary concern has been to extrapolate the doses in animal studies showing effects to equivalent doses in the human. With the recent emphasis on in vitro-based risk assessment, pharmacokinetic information is now being used to support the extrapolation from media concentrations associated with effects in vitro to the equivalent in vivo dose. This colloquium will provide a synopsis of the current state of the art for the application of pharmacokinetic data and modeling to risk assessments for foods, food contaminants and cosmetic ingredients. Three case studies will be provided illustrating the process of incorporating pharmacokinetic data in risk assessments based either on traditional or emerging toxicity study approaches. A panel discussion will enhance interaction with the attendees.

See SOT website for more information.

STP Modular Education Series: Toxicologic Pathology of the Immune System

The spring STP Modular Education course, Toxicologic Pathology of the Immune System, will be held April 19–22, 2015 at the Embassy Suites RDU/Brier Creek in Raleigh, NC. The course will be held over three days in an environment that facilitates an intensive learning experience. Practical evaluation and interpretation of toxicologic pathology data will be emphasized.

The STP Modular Education courses are designed with the novice toxicologic pathologist in mind; however, pathology residents/graduate students with an interest in toxicologic pathology or experienced pathologists who desire a more in-depth review in immune system pathology will also benefit from the course. In addition, nonpathologists with an interest in the histology, pathology, or toxicology of the immune system will also benefit from the course.

The course will bring together course attendees and world-renowned subject experts for didactic lectures and practical sessions. Microscopic evaluation of histologic sections will be done using whole-slide digital pathology images and practical evaluation/interpretation of toxicologic pathology data will be emphasized.

Early registration is encouraged to secure your spot at the best rate. Space is limited. The deadline for early registration is March 15.
